In this age of corporate agribusiness, HALOG FARMS
is the closest thing to the Waltons you're likely to find. They were one of the very first vendors when the Grand Lake Market debuted some four years ago. Their booth is typically staffed by Mimi Padilla or her sister, Jessica and more often than not their brother, Willie Jr. Their parents and aunt form the balance of the workforce that operates a 38 acre farm in Merced previously owned and operated by Mrs. Padilla's mother.
Year-round, Halog Farms offers onions, potatoes, yams, sweet potatoes and carrots conveniently packaged in one pound bags. When in season, they grow melons, tomatoes, squash, eggplant and bell peppers. In the winter months, they sell spinach, lettuce, fennel, leeks, turnips, parsnip, beets, scallions, cauliflower and broccoli. All crops are grown pesticide free.
During the peak summer months, they sell at 13 Farmers Markets each week and 9 during the winter.
